TRAVEL
IN QUÉBEC…
IN TOTAL
SAFETY.
Is it possible to take advantage of the summer
and drive in total safety on Québec’s roads?
The Minister of Transport, Minister responsible
for the Société de l'assurance automobile
du Québec and Minister responsible for the
Mauricie region, Ms. Julie Boulet, answers
questions from Québec Travel Booklet.
QTB – Over the past few years, people driving on
Québec’s roads have felt increasingly unsafe due to
the increase in the number of accident victims. Are
we right to worry?
Minister Boulet – I’m going to answer with the
slogan of the Société de l’assurance automobile du
Québec: “We are all responsible for our conduct
on the road”. You know, 80% of road accidents are
due to human behaviour. This message promoted
during Road Safety Year had an impact, because
the 2007 death toll is the lowest since 1948, when
we only had a fraction of the current car population.
In the 1970s, there were up to 2200 traffic
fatalities in a single year. Last year, 608 died on our
roads. So we have made real progress, but we
must continue our efforts, because even one death
on our roads is one too many.

QTB – What explains this improvement in 2007, in
your opinion?
Minister Boulet – Several factors. We showed
that political will can have a conclusive impact.
